We have been notified that the Dominican Order has designated Father Richard (Aquinas) Schenk a Master of Sacred Theology. The Master of Sacred Theology (often referred to as the S.T.M.) is not an earned academic degree, but rather is the highest honorary distinction our Order bestows upon any friar for his academic work. As the Dominican constitutions put it: “The masterate in sacred theology is conferred on those brethren who are recognized as eminent in promoting the sciences, especially the Sacred Sciences. Excellence of this kind is established by an ability for stimulating and leading doctrinal reflection and research as well as by published works of outstanding value and by significant status gained in a scientific field even outside the Order.” Father Richard, who entered the Order in 1971 and was ordained in 1978, has taught in the United States and Europe, has lectured extensively and published broadly. He is currently on a three-year leave of absence from the faculty of our Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology and the Graduate Theological Union so that he can serve as the Director of the Intercultural Center for Studies in Faith and Culture, a research center for theology and public polity at the John Paul II Cultural Center, Washington, D.C. Assigned to Saint Albert Priory, his ministry in Washington presently causes him to be in residence at the Dominican House of Studies for the Eastern Province. The S.T.M. will be conferred upon Father Richard at a special ceremony to be conducted at Saint Albert Priory on the afternoon of November 14th. More details about this celebrative event will be provided closer to the conferral itself. At Saint Albert’s we are very proud of our brother and his contributions to the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ through the classroom, the lecture hall, the seminar room, the written and published word and the pulpit. Congratulations, Father Richard!

Four Brothers Away on Residency this YearAn important segment of our formation program is the Residency Year, which takes a student brother to an assignment at a Dominican community and ministry in the Province for a full year. This year, four familiar faces will be away for their Residency year. Brother Dominic DeMaio is in Anchorage, Alaska, working with our friars at Holy Family Cathedral. Brother James Moore will be at Holy Rosary Parish, Antioch. Brother Dismas Sayre is at the Newman Center, Eugene, Oregon, and Brother Augustine Hilander is at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Seattle. Please keep them in your prayers during this important year of formation.
From the Prior
Are you praying for the friars at Saint Albert’s? We need it! Our life is challenging and the task of adapting to religious life can be arduous. I often think that our student brothers are heroic in choosing this life at a time when public appreciation for our vocation is somewhat compromised. Prayerful support is one of the greatest gifts you can offer our young men right now; please don‘t withhold it. Another important way you can support our young brothers is to help us shoulder some of the costs of caring for the Priory. You may be aware that our Priory requires a great deal of renovation at this time. Last year I begged for money for the brothers’ textbooks for the new school year and you gave us enough for two years’ worth of books! So this year I don’t need to hunt for ways to buy schoolbooks, but I do need to replace our gutters, downspouts and drain pipes for $50,000; order chapel roofing repairs for $10,000; and try to satisfy those who have been tormenting me to find a new piano for our chapel for $5,000. Landscaping for the front of the chapel is needed and that will cost $15,000! I’ve learned that all I need to do is ask, pray and wait! So now I’m waiting… God bless you, dear friends.
Fr. Michael
