Cloister Pool Needs Restoration

The view above reveals one of the most beautiful scenes at the Priory: the Saint Dominic Pool in the cloister garden.  Here the friars enjoy pausing for a few moments of refreshment between duties.  They can visit the goldfish or offer a prayer to Saint Dominic, whose likeness is depicted in the pool statue.

On Sunday evenings, our community Night Prayer concludes with a hymn in honor of Saint Dominic and a candlelit procession which culminates with the friars gathering around this statue in the cloister.

Within  the past few days, the water pump, which we have been coaxing along for a long time, finally breathed its last.  Without a pumping system, the fish are imperiled and the pool will have to be shut down.  It will take $2,000 that we don’t have to repair this system.  The friars would be deeply grateful if anyone were willing and able to cover the cost of this necessary and expensive repair project.

October: The Month of Our Lady of the Rosary

Many religious Orders favor a unique title for Mary, and for Dominicans, that title is Our Lady of the Rosary, to whom the Church dedicates the month of October every year.  Throughout the month we are encouraged to pray the Rosary, which provides us with an outline of the Gospel.  The Rosary is prayed daily in the Priory Chapel at 11:45 A.M.  All are welcome.  At Saint Albert’s, Rosary Sunday is observed this year on October 3rd.  Blessed roses will be distributed after Mass.  We also take up a collection every year on Rosary Sunday for the support of our formation programs. This collection goes to the Provincialate which distributes the funds to the Novitiate, to Saint Albert’s, and to the D.S.P.T., our school of theology.

Six Student Friars Return from Ministry Internships

Br. Jerome

Br. Anthony

Br. Michael

Br. Vincent

Br. John

Br. David

Following one or two years away from the Priory for study and ministry internships, six of our student Brothers have now returned to the Priory to continue their theological studies. All six of these Brothers have resumed their studies at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, as they continue their preparation for the priesthood.  They are welcomed home warmly!

Brother Jerome Cudden  spent one year studying theology at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., followed by a year of ministry internship at the Newman Center at the University of Washington. During that time he was in residence at Blessed Sacrament Dominican Priory, Seattle.

Brother Anthony Garcias also spent a year at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., followed by a year in Seattle.  Brother Anthony did his ministry internship in parish ministry at Blessed Sacrament Parish while residing in the Seattle Dominican priory.

Brother Michael Hurley was the third student of our Province to spend the 2002-2003 academic year studying in Washington, D.C.  Following that he spent this past year in residency at Saint Dominic Priory in Benicia, where he interned on  the parish staff.

Brother Vincent Mary Kelber had a unique sojourn away from the Priory.  In 2002 he left Oakland to spend one year studying at the Dominican House of Studies in the Philippines, and studying Chinese in Taiwan.  Last year he did a pastoral internship at Holy Rosary Parish in Antioch.

Brother John Thomas Mellein has returned to Saint Albert’s following one year in a pastoral ministry internship with our Dominican friars at Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage, Alaska.  In addition to parish work, Brother John Thomas also enjoyed varied opportunities to extend pastoral care and to learn with the Native community in Alaska.

Brother David Seid has returned from his residency year with the Saint Vincent Ferrer Dominican community in Riverside.  While there he was a pastoral intern at the Newman Center of the University of California at Riverside.  Brother David is presently completing the requirements for a Master of Divinity degree through Aquinas Institute.

This year twenty-four students are at Saint Albert’s and five more are interning and studying at other locations.

Three Friars Receive Ministries

In the past, there were seven steps to the priesthood: porter, lector, exorcist, acolyte, sub-deacon, deacon and priest.  Vatican II redesigned this process. Now, in addition to diaconate and priesthood, only two of the former minor orders are still given: the ministries of lector and acolyte (no longer reserved exclusively to those preparing for the priesthood).  At Vespers on October 3rd, our Provincial, Father Roberto Corral, O.P., will be at Saint Albert Priory to institute three of our students, Brothers Matthew Augustine Miller, Mark Francis Manzano and Boniface Willard, to the ministry of lector.  Our congratulations to these three brothers.

From the Prior

Fr. Michael Monshau, OP

Our friends who join us for worship may recently have noticed various guests with us in the chapel.

Father LaSalle Hallissey of our parish and priory in Portland was here for several days celebrating his silver jubilee of ordination.  Father Albert Nolan, a preacher, theologian and spiritual leader from our Order’s Province in South Africa used Saint Albert’s as a base of operations during his sojourn of several weeks in the States. Father Bartholomew de la Torre from Benicia was here for retreat.

This semester, our Dominican Sister Alice Fairchild is attending the School of Applied Theology housed in the Priory.  We were delighted to celebrate her golden jubilee with her and witness her symbolic renewal of vows at Sunday Mass in our chapel on September 25.

The parents of several of our brothers have been with us in recent weeks, and they are always  welcomed most warmly. All of our guests, Dominican and otherwise, are cherished by the community. That includes those whose visits simply involve joining us for Sunday Mass or any of our other liturgies during the week.  You are a blessing to us.  Come often.
