From the Editor
Welcome to the
first edition of O Lumen, the journal of the students of the
Western Dominican Province. We chose the name to honor St. Dominic whom we call
the “Light of the Church” in the hymn that ends our liturgical day. The title also brings
to mind a light shining in the darkness-- the Light of Wisdom, the Light
of Christ.
And as a light shines in the darkness, so must we shine our light in the
world. Therefore, it is fitting that our first issue is concerned with the New
Evangelization. We begin our issue with three articles on this
Feature subject.
The first, by
David Seid, O.P., looks at the New Evangelization from a
distinctly Dominican perspective. The second article is a review of Tracy
Rowland’s Culture and the Thomist Tradition by
Bernhard Blankenhorn, O.P.
The third is a perspective on the New Evangelization from one of our
cooperator brethren,
Isaiah Mary Molano, O.P.
Next we hear in News from some of our brothers
who are away from St. Albert’s this year, spending their year studying on
another continent.
Dismas Sayre, O.P. describes the Feast of St. Rose of
Lima, from that city in Peru, and
Bryan Dolejsi, O.P. reports on his experiences in
Kenya.
In honor of his 25th anniversary, and recognizing that John Paul II could
justly be called the “Pope of the New Evangelization,” we decided that it
was fitting to include in Perspectives a look
at the Holy Father’s legacy by
Raphael Mary Salzillo, O.P. We also have a contribution from a
non-Dominican, Andrew Younan, who has lived with our community for the
past year and shares his experience.
We showcase in The Arts poetry from one of our literary talents,
Jeremiah Loverich, O.P., who
has been previously published in other journals. See our
new photographs
in the Arts section. We also have works by
Dismas and Andrew and we invite you to share some Humor with a few
of the brothers. Finally, we have an
interview with
Aquinas Stoffel, O.P., who is spending the year in Washington, D.C.
I hope you enjoy this inaugural issue! We welcome any feedback you might
give. You may write us at: O Lumen,
