Saying Goodbye to Sister Maria Goretti

This past weekend our community said goodbye to Sister Maria Goretti Eder, O.P., who faithfully served at St. Albert's for 39 years as the director of our kitchen until 1995.

Sr. Maria Goretti was born to Josef and Maria Eder in Altotting, Germany in 1924. Although she originally planned to be a Carmelite and dedicate her life to praying for priests, God had something different in mind. …

Annual Aquinas Lecture

Entitled "Baptismal Theology and Practice in the Age of St. Thomas Aquinas," this year's Aquinas Lecture at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology was presented by our very own Fr. Augustine Thompson, O.P.

While focusing primarily on the theology of baptism during the 13th century, the structure of the rite, as well as the architecture of numerous baptistries, Fr. …

Christmas 2012

The two weeks after Christmas Day are rather quiet at St. Albert's. All of the student brothers, and many of the senior friars, use the time between semesters to visit their families and friends. But before everyone heads to the airport on December 26th, we celebrate Christmas as a community. Mass on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were joyous occasions, and our recreation time and dinner afterwards was a real treat. …

Thanksgiving Day Fun

After breakfast, a few of the brothers took a little break from their studies to toss around the old pigskin on Thanksgiving. Some of our cooks joined in on the fun, and Br. Marek (from the Province of Poland) proved to be a natural.

Novena and Pilgrimage in Honor of St. Jude

Every year, in late October, the Dominican brothers in formation participate in a novena and pilgrimage in honor of St. Jude Thaddeus. Jude was an apostle and relative of Jesus, and because of his name, is often confused with Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. This unfortunate  circumstance is one of the reasons St. …

Our Generous Benefactors

Feeding, housing, and educating each of the Dominican friars preparing for ministry as priests and brothers costs the Western Dominican Province tens of thousands of dollars annually. So every year the friars make an appeal for help in this endeavor in the parishes and campus ministries who are served by us. The response is often quite generous, but perhaps the most remarkable donation of all comes from an unexpected source - the second grade students from Holy Rosary School in Antioch, CA. …

Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

This past Sunday our community celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, a special day for the Order of Preachers. It was our Dominican brother Pope Pius V who established the feast after the Battle of Lepanto, originally calling it the Feast of Our Lady of Victory.

In addition to the special collection we take up on this day, Fr. …
